How to Turn a Podcast into Short-Form Videos: A Step-by-Step Guide

An hour-long episode is a gold mine. Most people will never play it in full, but they will watch a short video with one strong idea — and come back for more.

Why short videos from long-form content

A podcast builds depth; short video builds reach. Combine them and every episode works twice: your loyal audience listens to the full conversation, and new people discover you through short formats on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and LinkedIn.

1. Record with video in mind

  • Record video, not just audio — ideally with a separate camera on each speaker.
  • Get good light and clean sound; editing can rescue a lot, but not everything.
  • Let guests answer in full sentences so an excerpt makes sense without the question.

2. Look for moments that stand on their own

A good moment for a short video has a clear start, a point and a reason to keep watching. Look for:

  • Strong, slightly contrarian opinions.
  • Concrete advice the viewer can try right away.
  • Personal stories and emotion.
  • Surprising numbers or facts the guest brings up.

3. The first seconds decide everything

Open with the idea, not the intro. If the point lands halfway through, move it to the start or add a text hook that says why to stay. Cut pauses, repetition and filler.

4. Captions, format and visuals

  • Vertical 9:16 for Reels, TikTok and Shorts; square or 4:5 also works on LinkedIn.
  • Bold, legible captions — many people watch with the sound off.
  • A consistent visual style so people recognise your brand mid-scroll.

5. Each platform on its own terms

The same video can work across networks, but the caption, length and tone should adapt. On LinkedIn a matter-of-fact post with a question helps; on TikTok a faster pace; on YouTube Shorts a clear title. Always link to the full episode.

6. Rhythm and review

Plan a series of videos from each episode to cover several weeks. Track which topics and hooks people watch to the end and share, and feed those lessons into future episodes — including the questions you ask your guests.

The bottom line

Short videos from a podcast are not about chopping a recording into pieces. They are about picking the right moments, a strong opening, captions and adapting for every platform. If you want it handled end to end, send us the recording and we will take care of the rest.
